Heart Health Workshop

We offer group workshops for patients who have hypertension or high cholesterol. The interactive workshop provides helpful information for patients about managing their blood pressure and cholesterol.  These workshops include information about:
  • What is hypertension and cholesterol?
  • Risk factors that can affect your heart health
  • Lifestyle changes that can improve your heart health
  • Information about medications used to treat high blood pressure
  • Learn about the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet and whether it’s right for you

1. Is olive oil the main culinary fat used?

Choosing Healthier Fats - Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fat. Using unsaturated fats instead of saturated fats in cooking and preparing food is advisable.

2. Are ≥ 4 tablespoons of olive oil used each day?

Healthy fats are better than very low fat - Med diet is more beneficial than a very low fat diet in prevention of CVD.

3. Are ≥ 2 servings (200g each) of vegetables eaten each day?

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables for vitamins, minerals, and fibre.

4. Are ≥ 3 servings (80g each) of fruit eaten each day?

Fruit provides key nutrients and helps reduce risk of chronic disease.

5. Is less than 1 serving of red/processed meat eaten each day?

Reduce red/processed meats; choose white meat, fish, or plant protein.

6. Is less than 1 serving of butter/margarine/cream eaten each day?

Keep saturated fat low; choose plant-based or reduced-fat alternatives.

7. Is less than 1 serving of sugary beverages consumed each day?

Sugary drinks worsen risk factors for CVD.

8. Are ≥ 3 glasses of wine consumed per week?

Moderate alcohol may be protective, but non-drinkers should not start.

9. Are ≥ 3 servings of legumes eaten per week?

Soluble fibre helps reduce cholesterol.

10. Are ≥ 3 servings of fish/seafood eaten per week?

Oily fish provides essential omega-3 fats.

11. Are < 3 servings of pastries/sweets eaten each week?

Processed foods often contain saturated fat, salt, sugar, or trans fats.

12. Is ≥ 1 serving of nuts eaten each week?

Nuts provide healthy fats, fibre, and micronutrients.

13. Is white meat eaten instead of red/processed meat?

White meats have lower saturated fat.

14. Are pasta/vegetable dishes with garlic/tomato/onion eaten ≥ twice weekly?

Tomato and garlic/onion/leek sauces are key in the Mediterranean diet.
